The Phillies have signed left-handed pitcher Matt Strahm to an extension, the team announced Sunday morning.

The contract runs through 2025 and includes a “club/vesting option for 2026.” The deal is worth $7.5 million in 2025, according to Matt Gelb of The Athletic. The club option for 2026 is for $4.5 million, but it can become a $7.5 million vesting option if Strahm reaches 60 innings pitched in 2025.

Strahm was scheduled to become a free agent after the 2024 season. He originally signed a two-year, $15 million deal with the team in the 2022-23 offseason.

He is the second Phillie to sign an extension this offseason, with Zack Wheeler agreeing to a three-year, $126 million contract that begins in 2025 earlier in the spring.

Major Phillies free agents for next offseason include right-handed pitcher Jeff Hoffman — and that’s about it. Both Whit Merrifield and Seranthony Domínguez have club options for 2025 worth $8 million.

Strahm was excellent as both a starter and a reliever for the Phillies in 2023. He posted a 3.29 ERA in 87 2/3 innings. He had a 3.51 ERA as a member of the rotation in the beginning of the season. He did not allow an earned run during the postseason and closed out the Phillies’ NLDS upset over the Braves.

With the Phillies starting pitching depth in a much better spot than it was last year, the team envisions a more traditional back end of the bullpen role for Strahm in 2024.
