Phillies Reportedly Show Interest in Delmon Young

According to Jim Salisbury of, the Phillies are seriously considering signing free agent outfielder Delmon Young.

The Phillies outfield has been a point of emphasis this offseason, but little has been done to address it. Ruben Amaro stayed away from the expensive names and instead added Ben Revere through a trade. That leaves younger, unproven players at the corner spots. Amaro has publicly stated he may have to live with some sort of outfield platoon.

Young, still just 27 (seems older), has had some off-the-field issues in the past, including a 50-game suspension in the minor leagues for throwing a bat at an umpire. Young was also arrested in 2012 for shouting anti-Semitic slurs while intoxicated outside a New York City hotel. He was banned seven games for the incident.

As former Phillies Nation colleague Michael Baumann stated on twitter today, “there are a lot of Jewish people in Philadelphia…wouldn’t dropping Delmon Young in the middle constitute a danger to public safety?”

On the field, it’s been up and down, as well. Young knocked in 112 runs in 2010 with the Twins, yet has never posted better than the 1.5 WAR he put up that year. He has the ability to drive in runs, and is a career .284 hitter, but would provide a marginal upgrade over guys like Ruf or Brown, at best. Young certainly provides no upgrade with his glove over any outfielder on the roster.

While it’s an interesting thought because of the talent he has shown at times, it doesn’t seem like a strong fit.

Is he a project? Is he worth the contract with the chance he needs the right coaching staff and right chance to grow? He’s played the outfield and played MLB games, something a lot of out outfield hasn’t.

Delmon Young? This just shows you how desperate Ruben Amaro is.

I seriously hope this is just RAJ refusing to tip his hand in ANY way even if it would be to dispel a move to bring Young here. He would be a horrible fit, and more of the same OBA problems we already have with our offense, not to mention he has zero to negative defense.. this better be a joke

Signed for 750K, sounds like he’s worth that to me.

So we now have 7 outfielders? Figure they keep 5 on the 25.
    1) Revere
    2) Ruf
    3) Brown
    4) Mayberry
    5) Nix
    6) D. Young
    7) The Rule 5 kid (I can’t remember his name)

Who’s out? My first guess would be Mayberry.

2nd one? Ruf AFAIK is the only one with options…hate to see him not get a shot with the potential of his bat. I don’t know that they’d just eat Nix’s contract. RAJ can’t seem to admit his Rule 5 guys can’t play, so are they going to risk having to give that guy back?

The rule five draft pic Ender Incerate was probaby planned during the time the Revere trade was going down. He’s not a huge loss, and you knows if the diamondbacks even want him back. Mayberry need’s to go, and we have depth at 1st with Ruf to take Mayberrys backup spot.
