Gameday: Rockies (58-67) vs. Phillies (54-69) – Phillies Nation
2013 Gameday

Gameday: Rockies (58-67) vs. Phillies (54-69)

Colorado Rockies (58-67) vs. Philadelphia Phillies (54-69)

Jeff Manship (0-2, 7.20) vs. Ethan Martin (1-2, 6.28)

Time: 7:05, Citizens Bank Park
Weather: 77, cloudy

Media: Twitter and Facebook

The Rockies come to town for their usual August jaunt to Philadelphia, amid zero fanfare. Really, here’s what we have to look at tonight.

-How does Ethan Martin fair as a starter? He seems cut more from the cloth of a reliever.

-Can Jimmy Rollins heed the call from Ryne Sandberg and take more walks, raising his OBP?

-How does Carlos Ruiz fare hitting 2nd?

Lineup: Rollins SS, Ruiz C, Utley 2B, Brown LF, Ruf RF, Asche 3B, Mayberry CF, Wells RF, Martin P

Gameday Beer: Michelob Ultra 3498868847_cdfdc0e2ed

If you want to run 10 miles, then drink a beer, this is your cold one. At least that’s what the commercial tells us, and we should always trust that. But anyway, if you’re working out and you want a low cal beer to quench your thirst, here it is.

    What is this, 20 questions?

-How does Ethan Martin fair as a starter? He seems cut more from the cloth of a reliever.

Ya think? Not overwhelmed by that .295 BAA over the last few weeks? Tell ya what. ANY starter not pitching well seems cut from a relievers cloth. He has good stuff, best to keep him as a starter for another year and see if they can muster some command progress. Good heat, good curve there’s potential there. Or another way to look at it is what makes one think he’d be a successful reliever juust cause he cain’t (to date) start.

-Can Jimmy Rollins heed the call from Ryne Sandberg and take more walks, raising his OBP?

Ahem. TOUCHEEE subject. Ryno’s been a coach here for 7/10ths of a season. Coaches, you’d think, are supposed to work with players. You would think Jimmy might be receptive to suggestions/instructions from a HOF player. Now, just because of a title change, the relationship will blossom? I dunno about this one.

How does Carlos Ruiz fare hitting 2nd?

Skip the nonsensical rhetoric evaluating Monsieur Sandberg so far. Friday was bedlam, and as much chance of winning as a white suburbanite walking through Harlem at 3 AM, or as old friend Papa Gold used to say, 3 AM in the morning. Saturday was the ultimate mismatch. Only horrific move he’s made so far is you know who leading off yesterday. Chooch in the 2 almost more than offsets it. Unfortunately, if he keeps him there, when he plays Mike Young, it probably drops him into a more potent RBI situation. But as an isolated move, bravo.

The Rox, in a word, sux. de la Rosa Wednesday figures to be the only underdog game. Phils are favorites tonight, 120 over 100, You can’t expect Manship to pitch well until he does. The o/u of 9 seems an over enticement. Phils could win 3 of 4 here and cause some overreaction the other way, which’d be a welcome change after recent weeks. But in al likelihood, they find a way to split the series. Dropping 3 of 4 would be a disgrace, but that’s not new this year.

Take more walks?? That from the new skipper…appointed by Amaro??? ….

Wait a second…wasn’t it Amaro who was quoted sometime in the past year saying that he really didn’t care about walks??

    Dorothy Mantooth vs Ethan Allen.

    An instant classic.

Been watching the Mets a lot lately. Vs the Padres and Twins.

These are some really bad teams. I call it a skellfest.
The line ups and the level of play is truly bad.

Then I tune into the Phillies and they are somehow worse.

Mets already won today. Phils will need to win to keep up.

I would complain about the lead off hitters .304 on base and .640 OPS.
But then tonight the 2 hole hitter somehow has a lower OPS than that.

The MEts have a CFer who is great defensively. But cant hit.

But the truth is his OPS is 50 points higher than both Rollins and Ruiz.

    That’s where the Phillies are.

#3 in pay roll and not as good as the Mets whose only major league hitter is Marlon Byrd.

Byrd and those young arms are enough to finish ahead of the Phillies though.

Cant blame Ryno for any of this.

This is the team Ruben assembled.

    @ Chuck A

Ive been harping on walks for years.

Hope all is well with you.

Still have reservations to stay at your house the night before the WS parade.

So this garbajjjjjjjjjjj team doesn’t have a better player int he minors than Mayberry. (rhetorical).

My favorite part of Mayberry playing is when super-analyst Gary”Sarge’ Matthews decalres that …” For me ( he says that 50 times a game) he’s pulling off the ball”. Brilliant, incisive, analysis!

He did pull off that one a little bit..

Might as well get the all-Martin team overwith while Ethan’s cruising along and in the game…

    P – Ethan Martin

    C- Russell Martin

    1B – Tino Martin ez

2B – Alfred Manuel “Billy Martin

    3B – Pepper Martin

    SS – Martin Marion

    LF – Jerry Martin

    CF – Leonys Martin

    RF- Uncle Martin

Overberry’s homer doesn’t count as off a righthander since Manship is as righthanded as Sterling Joe Blanton.

They actually had ’em loaded with none out, and scored a representative amount of runs.

As shocking as BJ walking the first dude on 4 pitches yesterday, and NOT giving up a run.

Ken you can have Ricky Martin do the anthem too.

    Hes livin la vida loca

    Like the Phillies!!!

This 4 game series with the mets is the biggest series in 5 years.

    I cant wait.

    Go Phils!!!!

Wonder how D’arund, or however its spelled will do. Probably gonna see a fair amount of time.

You and I could beat the Twins.

    Hilarious Martin post!!!!

Have to LUV that above Mayberry call out- perhaps he signed onto PN prior to that HR

  9. Ken Bland

    August 19, 2013 at 8:26 pm

Here’s the deal with Martin at this point. He’s been like a 5-6 inning guy cause the team sucked when he pitched, he didn’t help, but he ALWAYSfell behind.

Would be nice to see some shutdown and get stronger as he goes through 7, geez…8, he dreamed? and really establish a base. He’s got the tools, no doubt. But lotsa dudes with the tools come and go.

One 3 ball count, NOT bad.

Talk is D’Arby is going down when buck is back . buck has been on maternity leave.

    That sounds painful.

    The photo Ken.

I need to make it my face book default photo.

He is no longer Ruben Minaya.
that is an insult to Minaya.

    Rollins LOLOLOL

Ryno trying to get him to not try to hit homers.

    Well hes got 5

    Jimmy pop up

    Oh well.

    4 runs in an inning.

I googled it and the last time they Fightins had 4 runs in an inning

Bush was president and Ken Blands jokes were fresh.

    • Ken Bland

      August 19, 2013 at 8:36 pm

I resent that, Andrew. All my jokes, well, okay, some of my jokes are g rated/

      Fpr example.

I see Brian Cashman’s former mistress got in the act tonight. She told a news outlet today that Brian told her that he knew of a handful of Yanks doing roids.

This was actually educational to me.

I thought when you had a mistress there were better things to talk about than roids. But this is not the place for wife cheating lessons.

      Rimshot back atcha.

If you think any sport is clean at this point your crazy.

Anything where there are millions of dollars at stake there will be cheating.

I like to think about what cocktail Lenny Dykstra would cook up for the playoffs.

He was as good as any hitter ever in the playoffs.

    I respect it.

I am seeing some signs of life today.
Or maybe its just a fact of facing Dorothy Mantooth and a suspect Rockies team.

    Horse walks into a bar.
Bartender says why the long face?

    bada booom

    That was a Tulo bomb

Be careful here Ryno very careful

    • Ken Bland

      August 19, 2013 at 8:58 pm

I was pretty surprised, or maybe very is a better word that Bernie Williams got demolished in the Hall vote, like 3%, didn’t make the cut. So I kinda use him and that result as a baramoter.

I think Helton will have a better card than Bernie did, Coors or not. If you have an opinion on him, what might it be far as the Hall.

      Not Jimmy, dammit. Helton.

  13. Andrew from Waldorf

    August 19, 2013 at 9:03 pm

Williams was very NY over rated. His fielding they would make like it was all time greatest and it wasn’t.

    I don’t think Helton is a HOFer.

Maybe left Ethan out a little too long .

    Bull pen time.

    Please no Paplebum

Make it a non save situation

    • Ken Bland

      August 19, 2013 at 9:09 pm

Yeah, Bernie was on the weak side arm strength wise, covered decent ground. The question really wasn’t if Helton’s an HOF, more if he’d get a half decent amount of votes, but that’s cool.

I’d actually like to see Papelbon pitch, and pitch well/ These guys go through cycles. He’s not as bad as some would have you believe, although it wouldn’t kill the guy to mix it up more than 2 and 4 seamers.

But I understand why you don’t wanna see him.

  14. Ken Bland

    August 19, 2013 at 9:11 pm

If this does evolve into a Phillies save situation, their last save, by Paps, was July 11. Over 5 weeks ago.

    Another one filed under unbelievable.

  15. Andrew from Waldorf

    August 19, 2013 at 9:16 pm

I just wouldn’t be surprised if Paplebum blew it

I can see him getting ran out of time.

Only Ruben burger king would give a closer the contract he did.

Helton will not get a lot of support.

    Unless they think hes clean.

there were 0 inductees this year. At some point have to put someone in or the ceremonies are boring.

I still say in like 50 years some committee will put Rollins into the HOF
And ill roll over in my grave.

  16. Ken Bland

    August 19, 2013 at 9:22 pm

well, Tulo will probably bat now with at least 1 on after baseball’s greatest play, Ball 4 to the leadoff man starts the 8th.

  17. Andrew from Waldorf

    August 19, 2013 at 9:28 pm

Ive argued that a walk is better than a home run before.

It puts pressure on the other team.

A solo home run and its overwith.

    Next batter up

  18. Ken Bland

    August 19, 2013 at 9:30 pm

And far, far from out of this inning.

    August 19, 2013 at 9:51 pm

Well here we go with paplebum

Ken just curious did Jimmy OBP go up or down today?

    Please win this

    • Ken Bland

      August 19, 2013 at 9:57 pm

Get this, he’s now at least 10 straight without a run scored. NOT a good leadoff stat. No matter who you blame.

    • Ken Bland

      August 19, 2013 at 10:09 pm

Jimmy has scored 2 runs this month, last on August 6th

  24. Ken Bland

    August 19, 2013 at 9:52 pm

I think Tulo would be the 5th guy up if it gets that far. Anybody’s guess what happens. Well, I certainly wouldn’t.
