Costly error, homers hurt Aaron Nola in loss to Yankees

A costly throwing error and a pair of New York Yankees home runs helped cut Aaron Nola’s start short as the Philadelphia Phillies lost the first game of the teams’ series 6-4 on Tuesday at Yankee Stadium to drop to 47-46 on the season

The Phillies held a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning, but a poor defensive display — a common occurrence this season for Philadelphia — allowed the Yankees to tie it. Shortstop Didi Gregorius snared a line drive and attempted double-off baserunner Greg Allen at third base. However, his throw sailed wide of third baseman Ronald Torreyes.

On the very next pitch, Brett Gardner hit a go-ahead home run into the right-field short porch off Nola to put the Yankees on top 3-2.

Nola gave up another run via the long ball in sixth as catcher Gary Sánchez launched a 436-foot bomb into the left-field seats. The right-hander was removed one batter later, throwing 5 1/3 innings. He was charged with four earned runs, having allowed an RBI groundout to Estevan Florial in the third.

The Yankees added a third homer in the seventh on a solo shot by Giancarlo Stanton off reliever Brandon Kintzler and their fourth solo home run of the game in the eighth on Florial’s first major-league home run off Enyel De Los Santos

New York starter Domingo Germán allowed two runs in four innings pitched as Rhys Hoskins hit a solo home run in the second inning and Torreyes hit an RBI double in the fourth.

The Yankees bullpen tossed five innings in relief. It gave up two runs on a Jean Segura RBI single in the eighth off Zack Britton and an Andrew McCutchen solo home run off Aroldis Chapman in the ninth. But ultimately the Phillies could not come back as Chapman worked around the homer to complete the save.

Shibe Vintage Sports Starting Pitching Performance

  • In his return from the COVID-related injured list, Nola surrendered two back-breaking home runs late into his outing to give New York the lead. Of course, the error by Gregorius didn’t help Nola’s cause, but the Phillies need more from the right-hander in games like Tuesday’s.
  • Domingo Germán didn’t go deep into the game for the Yankees, but didn’t pitch too poorly despite struggling in his previous few outings.

Phillies Nugget Of The Game

Nola allowed four earned runs against the Yankees, making it his third consecutive start having given up four or more earned runs. He’s given up at least four runs in eight starts this season.
