Luis Arráez hits for the cycle as Phillies pitching struggles in loss to Fish

Final Score: Marlins 8, Phillies 4

A night after the Philadelphia Phillies hung 15 on the Miami Marlins, Luis Arráez put on one of the better hitting displays that Citizens Bank Park has ever seen, helping the Fish to dispatch of Aaron Nola and company.

Jon Berti got the scoring started in the bottom of the third inning, taking a Nola curveball and hitting it 417 feet for a solo home run:

In the top of the sixth inning, the Marlins extended their lead. Reigning American League batting champion Arráez — acquired in an offseason trade with the Minnesota Twins — tripled into the right field corner with one out. Former World Series MVP Jorge Soler followed that with a double into the left field corner, bringing home Arráez. Soler was ultimately plated on an RBI single by Yuli Gurriel.

The Phillies did finally get to Jesús Luzardo in the home half of the sixth, as Kyle Schwarber hit a screamer that left his bat at 112.7 mph and ended up just inside the foul pole in right field:

Later in the frame, Bryson Stott came up with the bases loaded and two outs against Luzardo. On a 3-2 count, the red-hot Stott scalded a ball into left-center field, scoring Nick Castellanos and Josh Harrison.

However, left fielder Bryan De La Cruz did a good job of cutting the ball off and firing it into Jean Segura at third base. And when Stott took too wide of a turn around first base, Segura used the cannon arm that he so often displayed in red pinstripes to throw out his former teammate and end the threat. It was the latest in a series of baserunning miscues that have plagued the Phillies early in 2023:

And just as quickly as Segura threw Stott out, Arráez got a run back for the Marlins by hitting an opposite-field home run off of Connor Brogdon to open the top of the seventh inning:

The Marlins put the game out of reach in the top of the eighth inning, with Berti, Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Arráez all driving in runs off of Andrew Bellatti. With his RBI single, Arráez became the first player in the history of the Marlins franchise to hit for the cycle:

With the loss, the Phillies drop to 4-7 early on in the 2023 season. Meanwhile, the Marlins improve to 5-7 with the victory.

The Phillies and Marlins will conclude their three-game set Wednesday afternoon, with Zack Wheeler slated to square off against Edward Cabrera.
