Wil Myers launches two home runs, Phils shut out in blowout loss to Reds

Despite a slow start with his new team in Cincinnati, Wil Myers exploded at the plate for the Reds on Saturday afternoon.

Perhaps a potential first-base trade target for the Phillies this summer, Myers showed Philadelphia what he’s capable of up close, going 4-for-5 with three extra-base hits. The right-handed hitter blasted two home runs and a double in a 13-0 Reds blowout win on Jackie Robinson Day at Great American Ball Park.

Cincinnati has now won two of the first three games of this four-game set with the Phillies ahead of the series finale on Sunday.

With reliever turned fifth starter Matt Strahm on the mound for the Phillies (5-10), Myers launched his first home run as a Red to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. And after Strahm allowed two baserunners in the third, Myers then crushed the first pitch thrown by Phillies reliever Andrew Bellatti for a three-run homer to left.

The Phillies struggled on offense as they mustered only four hits off Reds starter Graham Ashcraft, who tossed six shutout innings. Bryson Stott and Edmundo Sosa recorded doubles, but Philadelphia could not get a runner across home.

Cincinnati, on the other hand, added another run in the fifth on a Jonathan India double off the glove of left fielder Jake Cave. Myers then continued his big day in the sixth, plating a run with a broken-bat double then coming around to score on a TJ Friedl two-RBI base hit to extend the lead to 8-0.

Philadelphia conceded in the bottom of the eighth, putting position player Josh Harrison on the mound to allow five more Reds runs before going down scoreless in the ninth.

• Sosa exited early with lower back discomfort after going 2-for-2 with a double.
• After two scoreless starts to begin the year, Strahm finally allowed a run as he gave up three earned in 2 2/3 innings.
